A postcard from Japan: Matcha
Tokyo, Kyoto & Uji
I’ve been drinking matcha for over a decade, long before it became trendy. Now, true master grade matcha is rare and almost precious.
This late November and December, I travelled around Tokyo, Kyoto and Uji, the birthplace of matcha, and of course, while I was there I searched for the purest matcha powder.
For the highest grades & Master grade, purchases are limited to one tin per person, so I returned to the same shops almost every day. Prices are around €40 to 70€ for 20g.
Tokyo is now full of matcha cafés and lattes, but many use lower-quality powders masked with milk or sugar. As someone who used to drink matcha pure, it’s surprisingly difficult to find a cup that feels clean, well-balanced, not too bitter and sweet and just enjoyable.
Briefly whisked water at 80°C. No milk, no sugar, nothing added. Just matcha, water and presence.
A proper Japanese-made whisk is essential, surprisingly hard to find, and of course, a true matcha bowl makes all the difference.
Here are some trusted teashops I truly enjoy for a good matcha:
Matsubaya Saryo (松葉屋茶寮) in Omotesando is a daily visit. The quality is consistently excellent and I love the calm minimalist aesthetic.
Kanetanaka in Omotesando is another gem. A hidden gem among locals, known for its tranquility. They offer a delicious matcha set and small lunches and dinners.
The Matcha Tokyo is a popular tea shop. I always order the gold blend (€10 per matcha), the highest quality they have. It can be a bit bitter but for a matcha in Tokyo, it’s definitely one of my favourites.
To buy matcha : here are my favorite stores
Mitsukoshi Ginza / Ippodo
Mitsukoshi Ginza / Shohokuen
Seisho-en Shinjuku (my favourite) for Yamamasa Koyamaen
Marukyu Koyamaen (mostly in Kyoto & Uji)
Nakamura Tokichi (Uji)
Yamamasa Koyamaen (Uji & Tokyo)
If you have any suggestions let me know, love to discover new quality places & shops ..
